AHMEDABAD: After the day began on a cloudy note with light rain and a cool breeze in Ahmedabad, the maximum temperature on Saturday was 8.5 degrees below normal at 32°C. This was the lowest maximum temperature for an April day in the city in a decade. The last time the maximum temperature fell below this in April was 31°C on April 21, 2012.
Since 1960, this is the ninth lowest maximum temperature in April, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Rain fell at a few places in North Gujarat and Saurashtra. The minimum temperature in Ahmedabad was also 2.5 degrees below normal at 23.2°C.
The cloudy weather was caused by a western disturbance in the form of a cyclonic circulation that was over southern Pakistan. It now lies over central Pakistan. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are most likely on Sunday and the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad is expected to settle at 34°C.
"Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are very likely at a few places in all districts of the North Gujarat region and at isolated places in the districts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch," the IMD forecast for Sunday states. Interestingly, a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwestern India from the night of May 1. Maximum temperatures may thus fall by a two or three degrees in the next 24 hours. Mahuva reported the highest maximum temperature at 34.4°C, followed by Kandla (33.9°C), Surat (33.8°C) and Vadodara (33.4°C).
