Two cages set up to capture leopard on the outskirts of city
Jaipur: Two trap cages have been set up near the abandoned sprawling campus of Cambay golf resort on Agra Road here to capture a leopard roaming in the area.
The forest department on Saturday confirmed that a leopard was frequenting the abandoned campus and nearby residential colonies and its image was captured using camera traps.
There are speculations that two leopards are in the area, but the forest department did not confirm the presence of two big cats.
Forest ranger Janeshwar Chaudhary said, “Nearly a week ago, the leopard strayed out of Silvian park forest block and entered nearby residential areas. The picture of a leopard was captured at the abandoned golf resort. It is not certain if there are one or two leopards. We have installed cages, trap cameras, and deployed a monitoring team.”
About five years ago, the Jaipur Development Authority took possession of Cambay golf resort situated in Jamdoli. The resort is spread over an area of 40 acres.
The property was sealed for alleged violation of allotment conditions. After taking possession of the premises, sign boards proclaiming it to be a property of JDA were installed.
The properties included Cambay golf academy and golf resorts. Villas bought by people there were also sealed. Since there is no habitation, leopards from nearby forest areas started frequenting it. Straying of leopards in residential areas has become common as their numbers continue to swell in Jhalana reserve and nearby forest blocks.
A senior official said that to prevent such incidents, the forest department has built a six-feet tall concrete wall on most of the boundaries of the Jhalana forest area in Amagarh and adjoining forest areas. “Proper arrangement has been made in the forest area for providing water for wildlife. Grasslands have been developed to increase the prey-base for wildlife. Their movement is monitored by installing surveillance systems and camera traps.”
“The rescue team rescues the big cat from populated areas and releases it in suitable forest areas when such incidences occur,” the official added.
