GURGAON: An assistant sub-inspector with Delhi Police was killed in a hit-&-run accident on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway on Friday morning.
Naresh Kumar (50), who was attached to the Kapashera police station, was returning home after finishing his night shift when an unknown vehicle crashed into his bike from behind. The accident took place between Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk around 9am.
"My father is an assistant sub-inspector at Kapashera police station. On Friday, he was returning home at Saraswati Enclave on his Discover motorcycle after finishing his duty when the accident took place," said Rakesh Yadav, a government school teacher in Delhi.
Rakesh, who lodged a complaint at Sadar police station, said he got a call a little after 9am, informing him about the accident.
"I was told that my father had been taken to the government hospital in Sector 10. I rushed to the hospital, and found that my younger brother, Harish Kumar, had reached there already. Doctors told us that my father had died during treatment. We got to know that an unknown vehicle that was being driven recklessly had hit my father's bike from behind," he told TOI. Rakesh and his brother were asked to identify the body.
Following a written complaint lodged by Rakesh, an FIR was registered against the unknown vehicle driver under sections 279 (whoever drives any vehicle, or rides, on any public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life, or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any other person) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
Police said they were scanning CCTV footage to trace the vehicle.
"Our emergency response vehicle (ERV) got an alert about the accident and rushed to the spot. They informed the nearest police station and the injured person was taken to the government hospital in Sector 10. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment," said Subhash Boken, a spokesperson for Gurgaon police.
"The victim was following all traffic rules and was even wearing a helmet. We have registered an FIR against the unknown vehicle driver and initiated an investigation. Our teams have been checking CCTV footage to trace the vehicle and the driver. We hope to arrest him soon," he added.
