COIMBATORE: The city police have arrested a notorious burglar and recovered 57 sovereigns of stolen gold ornaments, Rs 31.4 lakh and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) from him.
Police said B Sivachandran, 54, from VOC Street at Peelamedu, was involved in six burglaries and two motorcycle theft cases booked in the Peelamedu and Singanallur police stations. It was estimated that he had stolen nearly 140 sovereigns of gold ornaments.
After a series of burglaries at Peelamedu, city police commissioner V Balakrishnan formed two special teams led by assistant commissioner Parthiban to investigate the cases. Deputy commissioner of police Chandeesh told reporters that Sivachandran was involved in car thefts before 2015. "He then changed his modus operandi and started to burgle houses. He sold the stolen gold ornaments and used the money to pay an advance of 20 lakh to buy a flat near Peelamedu. He then bought a second-hand car at 9.2 lakh.
