NFL Draft Day 2 recap: Lions make more trades, get a QB
It was another busy day for Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who made trades with the Green Bay Packers, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals to move up, down, down and back up.
The Lions' first pick of the second round, 34th overall, was Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta.
Then they traded up from No. 48 to the Packers' No. 45 to pick up Alabama safety Brian Branch.
The Lions then traded No. 55 to the Chiefs for No. 63, No. 122 and No. 249.
They moved down again, striking a deal with the Broncos. Denver got No. 63 and No. 183 for No. 68 and No. 139.
With the 68th pick, the Lions snagged Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker, whose father Alan knows Holmes.
The Lions then opted to move up in a deal with the Cardinals, getting No. 96. The Cardinals received No. 122, No. 139 and No. 168.
The Detroit Lions opened the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday night with a pair of first-round picks, selecting running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Jack Campbell at Nos. 12 and 18, respectively.

No. 39 (102nd overall): Vikings take USC DB Mekhi Blackmon
No. 38 (101st overall): The 49ers take Alabama TE Cam Latu
Latu set a Crimson Tide single-season record for tight ends with eight touchdowns in 2021.
No. 37 (100th overall): Raiders take Cincinnati WR Tre Tucker
Tucker is still learning the position but has top-end speed.
No. 36 (99th overall): The 49ers take Michigan K Jake Moody
Moody is the first kicker selected in this draft. He was the first Michigan kicker to win the Lou Groza Award in 2021 and was a finalist in 2022.
No. 35 (98th overall): Browns take Baylor DT Siaki Ika
Ika is a tough man to move with just one man.
No. 34 (97th overall): Commanders take Arkansas C Ricky Stromberg
No. 33 (96th overall): Lions take Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin
Martin, a 6-foot-5, 330-pound tackle, started all 14 games for the Hilltoppers and had 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He also lettered in basketball and track.
No. 32 (95th overall): Bengals take Alabama DB Jordan Battle
No. 31 (94th overall): Cardinals take Stanford WR Michael Wilson
No. 30 (93rd overall): Steelers take Georgia TE Darnell Washington
Washington has plenty of talent but some teams were concerned about some of his injuries.
No. 29 (92nd overall): Chiefs take Oklahoma OT Wanya Morris
Morris was named after Boyz II Men's Wanyá Morris.
No. 28 (91st overall): Bills take Tulane LB Dorian Williams
No. 27 (90th overall): Cowboys take Texas ILB DeMarvion Overshown
Overshown can play sideline to sideline and is able to match up with tight ends and running backs in coverage.
No. 26 (89th overall): Rams take Wake Forest DT Kobie Turner
No. 25 (88th overall): Jaguars take Auburn RB Tank Bigsby
With a name like "Tank," you know Bigsby is a running back who will dish out as much punishment as he takes.
No. 24 (87th overall): The 49ers take Penn State S. Ji'Ayir Brown
Brown has high-level instincts and recognition skills. As a kid, he got the nickname Tigger as he resembled the high-energy Winnie the Pooh character.
No. 23 (86th overall): Ravens take Clemson LB Trenton Simpson
Simpson's father is Timothy Simpson, who served many years in the Army.
No. 22 (85th overall): Chargers take Washington State ILB Daiyan Henley
Henley is an undersized linebacker but has good instincts and tackling ability.
No. 21 (84th overall): Dolphins take Texas A&M RB Devon Achane
Achane has incredible speed, which is not surprising when you consider he also ran track.
No. 20 (83rd overall): Broncos take Iowa DB Riley Moss
Moss said he enjoys karaoke and loves singing Billy Joel's "Piano Man."
No. 19 (82nd overall): Buccaneers take Louisville DE YaYa Diaby
Diaby started all 13 games and finished second on the team in tackles for loss with 14.5 and sacks with nine.
No. 18 (81st overall): Titans take Tulane RB Tyjae Spears
Spears said his favorite athlete is former Lions running back Reggie Bush.
No. 17 (80th overall): Panthers take Oregon OLB DJ Johnson
No. 16 (79th overall): Colts take North Carolina WR Josh Downs
No. 15 (78th overall): Packers take South Dakota State TE Tucker Kraft
No. 14 (77th overall): Rams take Tennessee LB Byron Young

Strange had 32 receptions for 362 yards and five touchdowns.

The two-time All-Big Ten selection started all 14 games at cornerback and made 36 tackles, one for loss, had one interception among 11 pass breakups and one fumble he returned 45 yards for a touchdown.
No. 28 (59th overall): Bills take Florida G O'Cyrus Torrence
At 6-foot-5, 345 pounds, Torrence is one of the strongest players in the draft.
No. 27 (58th overall): Cowboys take Michigan TE Luke Schoonmaker
Schoonmaker will join his teammate Mazi Smith, who was taken in the first round, 26th overall, by Dallas.
No. 26 (57th overall): Giants take Minnesota C John Michael Schmitz
Schmitz was considered to be the top center in the draft.
No. 25 (56th overall): Bears take Miami CB Tyrique Stevenson
Stevenson is big at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, and likes to play a physical game.

No. 24 (55th overall): Chiefs take SMU WR Rashee Rice
Rice led the FBS in receiving yards per game with 112.9. He had 1,355 receiving yards, which ranked third in the country.

No. 23 (54th overall): Chargers take USC DE Tuli Tuipulotu
Tuipulotu's brother, Marlon, also played for USC and is now with the Philadelphia Eagles.
No. 22 (53rd overall): Bears take Florida DT Gervon Dexter
The sophomore started all 13 games at defensive tackle and finished with 55 tackles, four for loss, four quarterback hurries, two sacks, one interception and a pass breakup.
No. 21 (52nd overall): Seahawks take UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet
Charbonnet led the nation in all-purpose yards per game with 168 and led the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game at 135.9.
No. 20 (51st overall): Dolphins take South Carolina DB Cam Smith
This is the first pick of the draft for the Dolphins, who lost their first-rounder due to tampering.
No. 19 (50th overall): Packers take Michigan State WR Jayden Reed
In just three seasons with the Spartans, Reed had 147 catches, 18 touchdowns and 2,069 receiving yards.
No. 18 (49th overall): Steelers take Wisconsin DT Keeanu Benton
Benton played all 12 games and made 36 tackles, 10 for loss, and had 4.5 sacks.
No. 17 (48th overall): Buccaneers take North Dakota State OL Cody Mauch
Mauch played left tackle for the Bison and is has seven siblings.
No. 16 (47th overall): Commanders take Illinois S Jartavius Martin
Martin led the Fighting Illini in solo tackles with 51.
No. 15 (46th overall): Patriots take Georgia Tech DE Keion White
White had a team-high 14 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.
No. 14 (45th overall): Lions take Alabama S Brian Branch
Branch was third on the Crimson Tide with 90 tackles and was second on the team with 14 tackles for loss.

The Lions sent picks 48 and 159 to the Packers.
No. 13 (44th overall): Colts take Kansas State CB Julius Brents
Brents started all 14 games and had 45 tackles, 3.5 for loss, four interceptions and eight total passes defended.
No. 12 (43rd overall): Jets take Wisconsin OL Joe Tippmann
Tippmann started all 12 games at center, allowing only one sack and five pressures over 338 pass-blocking snaps.
No. 11 (42nd overall): Packers take Oregon State TE Luke Musgrave
Musgrave is the third tight end to go in this second round.
No. 10 (41st overall): Cardinals take LSU LB B.J. Ojulari
Ojulari is the brother of Azeez Ojulari, who was taken in the second round by the New York Giants in 2021.
No. 9 (40th overall): Saints take Notre Dame DE Isaiah Foskey
Foskey led the Fighting Irish with 11 sacks for the second straight season and had 14 tackles for loss.
No. 8: (39th overall): Panthers take Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo
That will give quarterback Bryce Young someone to throw to next season.
No. 7 (38th overall): Falcons take Syracuse OL Matthew Bergeron
The Quebec native spent four seasons at Syracuse, finishing with 39 starts at offensive tackle.

The Colts get the 44th pick and the 110th.
No. 6 (37th overall): Seahawks take Auburn DE Derick Hall
Hall had 19.5 sacks in 30 games.
No. 5 (36th overall): Rams take TCU G Steve Avila
The versatile Avila played center, guard and right tackle for the Horned Frogs.
No. 4 (35th overall): Raiders take TE Michael Mayer
The Raiders needed to replace Darren Waller and they get a player nicknamed "Baby Gronk."
TRADE: Raiders trade up, Colts get another pick
The Raiders got the 35th pick and the Colts got the 38th pick and the 141st.
No. 3 (34th overall): Lions take Iowa TE Sam LaPorta
He is listed at 6-foot-4, 249 pounds and will be joining his former Iowa teammate Jack Campbell in Detroit. The Illinois native finished with 1,786 yards on 153 receptions in his career.
No. 2 (33rd overall): Titans take Kentucky QB Will Levis
Levis' long wait is finally over and now he knows he is headed to Tennessee.
TRADE: Titans move up to No. 33
Titans get the 33rd overall pick and 81st pick. Cardinals get 41st pick, 72nd pick, 2024 third-round pick.
No. 1 (32nd overall): Steelers take Penn State DB Joey Porter Jr.
The Steelers did not have to go far to find Porter, whose father played for the Steelers.
