NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old Nigerian woman’s body was found stuffed in a bed box in an apartment in south Delhi’s Maidan Garhi on Friday.
Police have arrested a Nigerian man in connection with the murder, to whom the apartment had been rented out. A senior police officer said they have not ruled out the possibility of sexual assault and the woman's detailed medical reports are awaited.
Residents of Sriram Apartments in Maidan Garhi had informed police that a foul smell was emanating from a flat on the third floor.
A police team that reached the spot found the flat locked. “The owner of the flat was contacted and he revealed that he had rented out the flat to a Nigerian man named Obike Alexander Obinozie for Rs 12,000 per month. As the flat was locked, a key maker was called and the door was opened. They found the body of a woman wrapped in bedsheets and stuffed in a bed box. The body was shifted to a hospital for a postmortem, and forensics and crime teams were called for a detailed inspection,” said a senior police officer.
“Following hours of technical surveillance, Obinozie was finally traced and arrested. His relationship with the woman is being looked into,” the officer added.
DCP (south) Chandan Chowdhary said the motive behind the murder is unclear.
“Investigation is on to identify the same. A detailed autopsy report is awaited to ascertain the cause of death and if there was sexual assault. The matter is being looked at from all possible angles,” the officer said.
