GURGAON: An area that has gained notoriety as ‘new Jamtara’ for being one of the epicentres of cyber fraud in the country got its first major shakedown this week with Haryana Police detaining 125 suspects over Thursday and Friday.
The raids at 300 locations in 14 villages of Nuh were its largest field operation against cybercrime, carried out by 102 police teams involving more than 5,000 cops.
Parts of Nuh and its border areas with Bharatpur in Rajasthan and Mathura in UP emerged as hotspots for cybercrime, particularly during the pandemic, aided by a quirk of telephony that makes tracing locations of rogue callers difficult because of ‘black spots’ — mobiles catching signals from towers in different states — that the interplay of networks at the borders creates.

Planning the operation, police said, took a month, DIG (special task force) Simardeep Singh said on Friday. “The raids will have dented their operations. It should help reduce the number of cyber frauds in Haryana too and will lead investigators to fraudsters across several states,” he said.
The suspects are being interrogated and FIRs will be registered subsequently, police sources said.

Villages across Punhana, Pinangwan, Firozpur Jhirka and Bichhor were mapped and recces were done to determine what the hotspots are. “Police personnel from the entire state were involved in the operation. We launched the raids at the same time on Thursday morning,” the DIG added.
The villages where raids were carried out are Khedla, Luhinga Khurd, Luhinga Kalan, Gokalpur, Godhola, Aminabad, Mahu, Gulalta, Jaimat, Jakhopur, Nai, Tirwara, Mamlika and Papda.
