A Delhi University ad-hoc teacher allegedly died by suicide after recently losing his job at the Hindu College, reports said on Thursday.

According to the police, the deceased, identified as 33-year-old Samarveer, was found dead in his room in Delhi’s Rani Bagh area—hanging by the neck from a ceiling fan.

An official said the deceased, originally a resident of Molki village in Baran district of Rajasthan, was found dead in a room he shared with his cousin who was at work at the time.

He said that the police didn’t find a suicide but Samarveer’s cousin told the cops that the deceased was heavily depressed since being fired from his ad-hoc lecturer job at the Hindu College.

A report said that Hindu College Anju Srivastava was called for her comments but did not respond to calls and texts.

The officer said the deceased was found hanging from the ceiling fan using a bedsheet and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The senior officer said that forensics and the crime team did not find any evidence of foul play and prima facie it appears to be case of suicide.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party’s teachers’ wing Academic for Action and Development Delhi Teachers’ Association (AADTA) has called a protest in North Campus to protest the teacher’s death.

A friend of the deceased who is a professor at the Hindu college said he talked to Samarveer on Sunday and he sounded very upset and depressed after being removed from his post at the college.

According to his friend, Samarveer had turned down a guest lecturer’s job at the college earlier because he accepted an ad-hoc job in the Hindu College.

A woman has filed a complaint against the JW Marriott Hotel in New Delhi’s Aerocity, accusing the staff at the 5-star hotel of allegedly holding her hostage and berating in a dispute over the hotel bill.

In her complaint filed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Police Station, the 55-year-old woman, who is a legal advisor to a women business organization, claimed she was verbally berated by the JW Marriott staff and held captive with two male employees constantly keeping a watch on her and following her in the hotel and even waited outside when she went to the lavatory.

As per the FIR lodged by the police based on her complaint, the organization for which the woman works, had booked 94 rooms and halls at the JW Marriott Hotel for an event held on December 26, 2022, and had paid Rs 55 lakhs in advance.

A dispute arose over the rest of the bill amount as the organizers complained of poor service and food quality. After some disagreements, the firm paid the hotel another Rs 25 lakh on December 31 and said they would pay the rest on January 1, 2023, after checking all the bills and adjusting the advance amount.

The woman in her complaint alleged that her organization found some discrepancies in the room tariff and had sought time to check the bills thoroughly as it had already paid 80 per cent of the bill.

She said that her firm had booked 30 rooms till January 1 and asked the hotel that they would pay the rest of the amount by that date after checking the bills for discrepancies. However, she claimed that the hotel staff allegedly held her and some other organisers hostage and didn’t allow them to leave the premises until they pay the rest of the bill.

The woman said she only managed to get out of the predicament with the help of an officer from Delhi Police who was dispatched to her aid after she dialed 1901, their helpline number for women in distress.

She claimed that the hotel staff continuously harassed her during her illegal detention and alleged that one of the chefs touched her in an inappropriate manner during the event.

Meanwhile, the JW Marriott in a statement refuted the allegations against them as baseless and said the hotel is fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation into the incident.
