By Siva GorripatiVISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam police on Friday arrested four persons including the husband, in-laws, and sister-in-law’s husband in a 24-year-old pregnant woman Sweta's suspicious death case.
Cops registered a dowry harassment case against them.
It is recalled that the half-naked body of G Swetha of Nadupoor area in Gajuwaka surfaced on seawater in front of the YMCA on RK beach a couple of days ago after she was missing from her in-law’s house. The five months pregnant woman Swetha married Manikanta, a software engineer a year ago.
Based on the complaint lodged by Sweta’s mother Bhagadi Rama, police arrested Swetha’s husband Gurivelli Manikanta (27), her in-laws Gurivelli Santarao (60, Gurivelli Puspavathi (52), and her sister-in-law’s husband Y Satyanarayana (42).
The City Police Commissioner CM Trivikram Varma told media persons on Friday that Sweta’s parents gave Rs. 12.5 lakh cash, 20 tolas of gold, and 90 cents of land as dowry to Manikanta. After marriage, Sweta was staying in Nadupoor of Pedagantyada along with her in-laws.
Her in-laws allegedly harassed Sweta physically and mentally for additional dowry and land. Even her sister-in-law’s husband Satyanarayana misbehaved and outraged her modesty in the month of August 2022. She informed his misbehavior to her in-laws, who allegedly didn't take any action and allegedly supported Satyanarayana.
Sweta’s mother Rama informed that her daughter conceived in December. Sweta’s husband Manikanta beat her in the presence of Rama over a petty dispute. She complained to the police that her daughter was harassed physically and mentally.
Manikanta argued with Sweta over the phone and she was vexed with life and committed suicide.
City police chief Varma said that Three Town Police registered a case under sections of 498-A, 304-B, 354 read with 34 IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961.
