851 in fray for Kanpur Nagar corporators’ post
Kanpur: As many as 90 independent contestants have withdrawn their names from the Urban Local Body election contest for the post of corporator.
For the mayor’s post, all 13 candidates remain prepared to contest the election. After scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations, besides the 13 mayor candidates, there are 851 aspirants for the corporator’s post hoping to get elected to serve the citizens of Kanpur Nagar.
For Municipal councils of Ghatampur and Bilhaur tehsil, three candidates withdrew their candidature from the post of chairman and 10 from the election of member’s post. For Nagar Panchayat elections, one chairmans post aspirant and three for members’ post have withdrawn candidature. Only two contestants have been selected to poll for municipal council membership.
In Kanpur Nagar, as many as 951 contestants had filed nomination papers for corporatorship. Candidature of five contestants were rejected in scrutiny on April 25. Last date for withdrawal was Thursday when 90 contestants from 51 wards took back their candidature. Maximum four withdrawals were made in ward no.73 (Jajmau South) and ward 30 (Ambedkar Nagar) each. Three contestants withdrew their candidature from ward No 70 (Karrahi), ward 67 (Barra West) and ward 48 (Govind Nagar South) each.
Highest number of contestants, 21, are in ward no. 21 (Khadepur). There are 18 contestants in ward no. 87( Bingawan) and ward no. 22 ( Hansuram Awas Vikas).
According to the district election officer, symbol distribution to the contestants will take place on Friday.
