Police said Shankar had 15 criminal cases pending against him and had been detained under the Goondas Act twice.
CHENNAI: State treasurer of the SC/ST wing of the BJP and Valarpuram panchayat president P P G Shankar was hacked to death by a gang near Nazarathpet on the outskirts of Chennai on Thursday night.
Police said Shankar had 15 criminal cases pending against him and had been detained under the Goondas Act twice.
On Thursday night, he was travelling in his car on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway when a gang of at least four men hurled country bombs at the vehicle. In the impact, he lost control of the car. Shankar got down from the car and ran away. The gang chased him and hacked him to death in full public view.
Police personnel have been deployed in Valarpuram village to avoid any untoward incidents.
Shankar was to participate in the seventh death anniversary of BJP functionary Venkatesan on Friday.
Police suspect that he was murdered over an enmity over scrap business. In July 2022, a six-member gang was arrested for attempting to murder him.
