NMC delays decision on water cut for Nashik city
Water consumption in the city increased from 547 MLD in February to 557 MLD during the last 30 days due to summer
NASHIK: The civic body of Nashik is yet to take a decision on resorting to water cut in the city.
Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials said its plans for water cuts once a week are ready, which needs to be discussed with civic body commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar. They will immediately implement water cuts once they get the approval of the civic chief, said the officials.
NMC had earlier said by April-end, it would decide on the issue. According to them, they have a water quota in all three dams supplying water to the city that would last till July 31.
“But the problem would arise if the monsoon is weak and the water stock in the dams does not swell significantly. In that case, the water supply department had plans to restrict the water supply during June and July,” said an NMC official.
The official said the water consumption in the city has also increased from 547 Million Litres Per Day (MLD) in February to 557 MLD during the last 30 days due to summer.
Gangapur dam complex is the major source of water as it caters to 80% of the city’s water requirement, while the 20% of water is received from Mukane and Darna dams.
Considering the water scarcity in summer, former city mayor Dashrath Patil has demanded the NMC to step up its action against the pilferage of water. NMC should appoint squads and inspect whether the construction sites are using NMC’s water for the construction of buildings.
Patil alleged that the water supply in some parts of the city has been disrupted and the administration should ensure the residents across the city would get water regularly with full pressure.
Recently, a water pipeline near Old Gangapur Naka area burst during ongoing road work by a smart city corporation. The water supply in nearby areas had been disrupted for two days.
NMC officials said they would immediately solve water-related complaints of the residents.
