MUMBAI: A builder from Bandra, Mohan Wadhwa, was duped of Rs 47,002 by an e-caller in a new way after he received a phone call from a telecaller who said they could help pay the equated monthly instalment (EMI) of his vehicle loan for the current month as his bank account had been frozen.
As the builder's account was indeed frozen by Reserve Bank of India a month ago, he asked the woman caller to send him a link and then passed it on to his manager and asked the manager to pay the EMI for the loan using another of his bank accounts.
The link turned out to be a con. An officer from Khar police station said that they are investigating if any bank employee could be involved in the racket as the woman caller was well aware of Wadhwa's vehicle loan being due for payment. "As part of the probe, we have now sought details of the bank account to which the money was credited," said the officer. The officer said the money was debited after Wadhwa's manager clicked on the link and transferred Rs47,002.
