Mormugao sees 120 cases of dog bites every month
Vasco: Mormugao taluka has recorded around 1,200-1,300 cases of stray dog bites in the past one year.
“The casualty department has recorded an average of 120 cases per month from all over Mormugao taluka. The rise in cases of stray dog bites has been a cause of concern,” said Dr Anil Umraskar, a healthcare official at the Chicalim sub-district hospital.
Referring to the 37-year-old woman Vimal Suryavanshi who was bitten by over six stray dogs while returning home from work at Maimollem, Vasco, Dr Umraskar said, “This is a first-of-its-kind incident that I have seen in my entire career where stray dogs have grievously injured a person.”
He said that the patient has been discharged from Goa Medical College and Hosptial and is now recuperating at Chicalim sub-district hospital.
“As a precaution, we have administered anti-rabies injections to the woman as there are chances that the stray dogs could be infected with rabies,” said Umraskar.
Meanwhile, a team of Mission Rabies from Valpoi was summoned by social worker Noela Rodrigues at Maimollem on Thursday to impound the dogs that had attacked the woman.
