Newborn kidnapped, rescued within hours
Tirupur: The city police rescued a newborn within 12 hours after he was kidnapped from the Tirupur Government Medical College Hospital, and arrested a woman in connection with the incident on Tuesday.
Kamalini Naik, 24, wife of Arjun Kumar from Odisha, had delivered the baby boy on Saturday. “The accused, identified as Uma, was taking care of another woman, who was in the same ward after undergoing an abortion. Uma befriended Kamalini and offered to take care of her son. On Tuesday, she took the baby from the ICU and escaped from the hospital,” a police officer said.
The Tirupur city police formed three special teams to rescue the baby. The teams found that Uma had switched off her phone in Villupuram, and identified the tower location. They launched a search operation using Uma’s photos and arrested her from a hideout in Kallakurichi. Police also reunited the baby with his parents.
Meanwhile, the hospital administration has tightened security in the maternity ward.
