DIBRUGARH: A major tragedy was averted in the Tinsukia district after security personnel recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted under a flyover on the Makum bypass road. The IED was later successfully defused at a safe spot by a bomb disposal squad of the Army's 18 Garhwal regiment from the Dinjan military station.
As per reports, the IED was first spotted by local residents under the flyover around 10 am, spreading panic in the area. On receiving information, Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav immediately rushed to the spot and sought the help of the Army's bomb disposal squad. The bomb experts took the IED, which weighed around 2.5 kg, to an open field and a controlled blast was carried out at 12.10 pm without causing any damage to the nearby surroundings.
The SP said, "Today at 10 am, we received information of a bomb-like object under the Makum bypass flyover. Immediately the police and Army personnel reached the spot. The area was cordoned off, and the bomb disposal squad of the Army was called in. The bomb experts diffused the IED by carrying out a controlled blast in an open ground. The residual materials has been collected and chemical analysis will be carried out to find out the composition of the bomb. It was a crude bomb, not a sophisticated one."
The SP further said they were investigating the matter to figure out the persons involved, their motive and their intended target.
