Bokaro: Vedanta ESL Steel Plant has taken a significant step towards creating a greener Jharkhand through the Miyawaki technique, a Japanese method of creating mini-forests quickly.
The company inaugurated a Miyawaki forest site at Chamraidih village under Chandankyari Block, covering 2.64 acre and featuring more than 53,000 saplings of various species including kanji, sheesham, kadam, kachnar, tamarind, mahogany, pomegranate.
The project's launch was attended by Bokaro chief conservator of forest D Venkateswarlu and ESL Steel Limited Ashish Gupta CEO and other executives of the organization, said the ESL official. Developed by Japanese botanist Dr Akira Mayawaki, the method involves planting 3-5 saplings per square metre with a minimum of 15-20 different species. The resulting forest is multi-layered and requires no maintenance after two years. A pond has also been dug at the site to replenish groundwater and provide a habitat for various reptiles, mammals, and birds.
