Woman pays with her life for spouse’s greed for dowry

Ludhiana: A year after marriage, a 22-year-old woman committed suicide at the house of her relative in Bhamian Kalan. Following the incident, police booked her husband and his brother for abetment to suicide. They allegedly harassed her for not bring enough money and a motorcycle in dowry.
The FIR has been lodged against Vineet Kumar and his elder brother Vishal Kumar of Sawan Vihar Colony. The victim, Anu Priya, had married Vineet in February 2022.
In his complaint, Anu’s uncle Rajiv Kumar of Laxmi Nagar claimed that soon after marriage, Vineet and his brother started harassing Anu for dowry. The accused wanted her to bring cash and a motorcycle and used to beat her up as failed to meet their demands.
He said on April 24, Vineet took Anu at his brother-in-law’s house in Bhamian Kalan where Vineet thrashed her again. Afterwards, Anu Priya hung herself to death.
ASI Madan Lal from Jamalpur police station said a case under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (Act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC has been lodged against the accused who are on the run.
