Two charged in death of gas station clerk arrested after West Side police pursuit
Columbus police arrested two people Tuesday night after a pursuit on the West Side, both of them charged in connection with the death of a 24-year-old gas station clerk earlier this month.
Officers spotted 22-year-old Abdulwahida Osman, of the West Side, around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in a car on Sullivant Avenue. Osman had been charged with murder in connection with the April 20 shooting death of Saiesh Veera.
Officers pursued Osman's vehicle, which crashed a few minutes later at the intersection of West Mound Street and Harrisburg Pike.
Osman and the other occupants of the vehicle, including 17-year-old Darren Christian, were all taken to area hospitals for evaluation. Osman and Christian also were taken into police custody.
Christian is facing a delinquency charge of murder in Franklin County Juvenile Court in connection with Veera's death.
Around 1 a.m. on April 20, Veera was working as a clerk at the Shell station at 1000 W. Broad St. in Franklinton. Police said a robbery was attempted at the gas station's convenience store and Veera was shot.
Veera had come to the United States from India for a chance at additional education, according to an online fundraiser started by friends to help send his body for burial to India, where his mother lives.
The 24-year-old was planning to quit his job at the gas station within a few weeks of his death. He was widely known in the Columbus cricket community. The fundraiser has raised more than $276,000.
