RAJKOT: Shivbhadrasinh alias Shivubha Gohil, one of the accused in the Rs one crore extortion racket and second brother-in-law of main accused Yuvrajsinh Jadeja, surrendered before the Neelambaug police station in Bhavnagar on Tuesday.
The police also recovered Rs 25.50 lakh out of the Rs one crore extortion amount from a friend of Shivubha.
Jadeja, a student activist and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) youth wing leader is accused of extorting Rs one crore from two prime accused in the dummy candidate racket for not making their names public in a press conference.
The police have recovered a total of Rs 72.50 lakh in the last two days.
Sanjay Jethwa, Shivbha's business partner, who was called for questioning, admitted that the former had given him a bag to take care of. When the police opened the bag in the presence of witnesses, they found Rs 25.50 lakh cash. A hard disk that belongs to Shivbha's office was also seized and sent for forensic analysis.
Shivubha was detained for questioning and he would be formally arrested later. Before submitting himself to the police, Gohil told reporters, "This is a political conspiracy hatched by the government to silence Yuvrajsinh. Last year also, he was framed in a false case."
Asked about the recovery of Rs 38 lakh from co-accused and his cousin Kanbha's friend, he said "This was also politically motivated and set up."
He admitted to the meeting with Prakash alias PK Dave and Pradip Baraiya, the masterminds of the dummy candidate racket but said they had met to collect the evidence of their involvement. He denied any financial transaction as alleged by the police.
Of the six named in the FIR, five people are now in police custody.
