Erode: Dead fish were found floating in the Kanirowthar pond, which belongs to the Erode municipal corporation (EMC), on Tuesday. Officials from the EMC and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) visited the pond and collected water samples for testing.
Kanirowthar pond has been in use for more than a century. The pond, which as per British period records was spread over 44 acres, has now been reduced to 14 acres due to encroachments.
Social activists in the city had revived the pond with support from EMC and were rearing fish. “We were all shocked to find dead fish floating in the water,” said K Sundar, one of the residents.
T Vijayakumar, assistant commissioner, zone 2, EMC, told TOI fish usually die during summer as the water becomes hot. “However, we can ascertain the exact reason only after we receive the
test result,” he said. Meanwhile, EMC officials fished out the dead fish and disposed them.
