The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) has planned to promote Jadung, the district’s last border settlement, into a tourism attraction, Tribune News Service reported.

The first of five villages to be reconstructed will be Jadung, commonly known as “Leh and Ladakh”of Uttarakhand (the residents were displaced during the 1962 India-China conflict). The state government thinks that by doing so, it would be able to develop this area into a sustainable tourism destination for astro tourism, trekking, hiking, nature camps, and tribal culture.

Jadung, a community lost in time and set in the Himalayas, offers unrivalled visual splendour with its snowcapped mountains and lush green valley. It is located at an elevation of 12,800 feet and is 180 km from Dehradun. It takes around 12 hours to get from Dehradun to Jadung.

The hamlet exemplifies the state’s efforts to build border communities via sustainable and responsible tourism.

Tribune News Service quoted Uttarakhand Minister of Tourism, Irrigation, Culture and PWD Satpal Maharaj as saying, “The state government is delighted to announce Jadung as Uttarakhand’s latest tourism destination. This is a great opportunity for visitors to experience the unique culture and beauty of the state. We are committed to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism in the state, and with the introduction of astro tourism, we hope this initiative will benefit local communities.” He made the comments during the flagging off the first familiarisation tour to Jadung.

The four-day trip included the first team of 25 special invitees, which included professionals from adventure tourism, astro tourism, journalists, and officials from the Ministry of Tourism and the UTDB. En route to Jadung, the team stopped in Harsil, Bagori, Mukhwa, Dharali, GartangGali, Gangotri, and the Nelong Valley in Uttarkashi district.

SachinKurve, Secretary of Tourism and UTDB CEO, was quoted by Tribune News Service as saying, “Visitors to Jadung can enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience that combines stunning natural beauty, thrilling adventure activities, rich cultural heritage and eco-friendly tourism options. The board has been working towards developing and promoting lesser-known destinations to reduce the pressure on popular tourist destinations and promote sustainable tourism across the state.”

For those seeking adventure, Jadung and its surroundings provide a variety of activities such as trekking, hiking, bird viewing, and nature camping.
