Samsung’s next-gen foldable flip phone will bring one of the most significant changes in the series’s history since the release of the Z Flip 3. For the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung is reportedly planning to enlarge the cover display. Its design has now been “confirmed” by a known tipster.

As we exclusively reported through our sources not long ago, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 should have a cover display that covers almost the entire half-shell of the phone. Furthermore, the screen won’t have a perfectly square or rectangular shape because of one irregular edge.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover display is expected to have the shape of a folder. This design has now been “confirmed” by tipster @UniverseIce, who claims that Samsung is “adapting the software design.”

Samsung hopefully has some clever ideas for the irregular display shape

The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cameras will prevent the cover display to run across the entire area of the phone’s half-shell, hence the folder design. This irregular display shape will give Samsung a unique opportunity to create clever software features. And supposedly, Samsung has already begun adapting the software to match the cover screen’s design.

Exactly how this will pan out is presently unknown. Some rumors say the contrary, suggesting that the notched display area won’t be of much use in practice. But regardless, the bigger size should lend more usability to the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen, and that’s not a small feat. It will be one of the most significant upgrades the series has ever gotten.

The next-gen foldable will mark the second time Samsung enlarged the Galaxy Z Flip series’ cover display. The original Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G had a very small 1.1-inch cover screen, but with the release of the Z Flip 3 in 2021, Samsung upgraded the series with a 1.9-inch cover display. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, which may be released in July rather than August, will supposedly have a 3.4-inch panel.
