NEW DELHI: The BJP on Tuesday alleged that the PWD of the Delhi government had spent nearly Rs 45 crore on the "beautification" of the official residence of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Civil Lines area and demanded his resignation on "moral" grounds.
BJP released some documents which purportedly showed that a total expenditure of Rs 44.78 crore was made against a sanctioned amount of Rs 43.70 crore on "addition/alternation" at the CM's government accommodation on 6, Flagstaff Road between September 2020 and June 2022.
An amount of Rs 11.30 crore was spent on interior decoration; Rs 6.02 crore on stone and marble flooring; Rs 1 crore on interior consultancy; Rs 2.58 crore on electrical fittings and appliances; Rs 2.85 crore on a fire-fighting system; Rs 1.41 crore on wardrobe and accessories fittings; and Rs 1.1 crore on kitchen appliances.
These documents also showed that a separate amount of Rs 8.11 crore out of the sanctioned amount of Rs 9.99 crore was spent on the camp office of the chief minister, which is located within the premises of his official residence.
"Kejriwal should tell the people of Delhi with what authority he spent around Rs 45 crore on the beautification of his bungalow when most of the public development works were stalled during the Covid phase," Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said. "It has been established that Kejriwal does not live in a house. He lives in a Sheesh Mahal. Kejriwal should resign from the post of chief minister on moral grounds," he added.
"The plush interior decoration included artistic and ornamental works, automatic sliding glass doors, decorative pillars, decorative interior walls and curtains with curtain tracks and motor among others. Imported Dior pearl while marble was procured from Vietnam and a special superior class marble polish was also imported for the house. The consultancy for these superior interiors cost Rs 1 crore," Sachdeva alleged.
"Wearing the mask of simplicity and honesty in front of the country, the kind of ostentatiousness he has created has been exposed. He should resign immediately," said the leader of the opposition in the Delhi assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri.
