Ludhiana: Continuing its crackdown against dyeing unit owners dumping untreated waste in sewer lines, the municipal corporation (MC) dismantled a sewer line which was illegally attached with the MC sewer by owners of dyeing units outside MC limits on Tajpur road. The action was taken after the civic body found untreated water flowing into the recently established Jamalpur Sewer Treatment Plant (STP).
Soon after getting information, an MC team led by executive engineer Ranbir Singh and SDO Amritpal Singh reached the spot. During inspection, MC teams found that the sewer line of the 50 mld common effluent treatment plant (CETP), established for treating the waste spewed by the dyeing industry on Tajpur road was overflowing. Due to this, effluents of dyeing units were flowing into MC sewer lines. Officials of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) were apprised about the issue and the contractor of the plant was directed to take corrective steps.
MC teams found another illegal sewer line which was attached with the MC sewer near the city bus depot on Tajpur road. PPCB SDO Jaspal Singh was apprised about it. On inspection, it was found that the line was installed by owners of dyeing units based outside MC limits on Tajpur road.
Civic body officials said that the line was immediately dismantled and recommendation was made to PPCB officials to take strict action against dyeing units involved. There are several dyeing units situated outside MC limits and PPCB will now conduct inspections to find the violators as the area falls under its jurisdiction.
MC commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal said regular drives were being conducted to check dumping of untreated dyeing industry waste into MC sewer lines. Recently, the civic body took action against two dyeing units caught dumping untreated waste into MC sewer lines in the Focal Point area.
In the case of another dyeing unit based in phase 8 dumping untreated waste into sewer lines, chief engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) Sandeep Bahl said that the board had issued directions for closure of the violating unit and directed PSPCL authorities to disconnect electricity supply available to the unit. Electricity connection of the unit and its waste water outlet leading to CETP conveyance system has also been disconnected. This defaulting unit detected on April 13, during a joint inspection of the MC and PPCB.
On April 24, MC caught an electroplating unit dumping acidic waste in MC sewer lines in the Focal Point area. On April 13, a joint team of MC and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) caught a dyeing unit in Focal point phase 8 dumping untreated waste in the sewer lines .
