A 16-year-old student is facing charges after officials at Tavares High School found a gun in his backpack during an administrative search Monday afternoon, deputies said.
According to an arrest affidavit provided by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was removed from class along with two other students because they appeared to be under the influence of drugs. When a school assistant principal searched their bags, he found a Remington Arms R51 9mm pistol inside the boy’s bag.
Authorities also found a magazine with six 9mm rounds inside. The magazine was not inserted into the gun, the arrest report said.
The student’s mother was informed and he was taken to the Lake County Detention Center. He is facing charges of carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a firearm by a minor.
The Orlando Sentinel is not naming the boy due to his age.
