YAMUNANAGAR: Police in Yamunanagar's Jagadhari town have arrested a man for allegedly murdering a 19-year-old girl for refusing his marriage proposal.
The girl had gone missing on April 17 and her decomposed dead body was recovered on Sunday night.
Yamunanagar DSP headquarters Kawaljit Singh said that the accused was identified as Gaurav alias Divanshu of Madhu Colony, Rampura in Yamunanagar city. The accused would be produced before the district court on Wednesday, he said.
As per the information, the deceased girl Komal had gone to a saloon in the Chhoti Line area of Jagadhri for beauty parlour class. When she did not return home on April 17, her father, Sonu Kumar, filed a missing case on April 18.
DSP Kawaljit Singh said that the family members of the girl had raised suspicion that the girl was confined by some youths.
The DSP said inspector Kewal Singh, in-charge of CIA-I arrested Gaurav from near Tejli Stadium in Yamunanagar.
“Initially, Gaurav denied that he murdered the girl, but after an in-depth enquiry, he confessed to the crime. Gaurav knew the girl for nearly three years and was pressurising her to marry him. The family of the girl had lodged a harassment case against Gaurav in the past. But Gaurav did not stop following the girl,” said the DSP.
He said the accused worked at a restaurant in the city.
“On April 17, when girl was going towards the HUDA sector after leaving a salon in Jagadhri, Gaurav stopped her in a secluded place. When the girl started opposing to his advances, he hit her with a brick on her head. When she fell to the ground half-conscious, the accused strangled her neck with a cloth and murdered her. He waited at the spot for 10 minutes to confirm that girl was not alive and then fled the spot,” said DSP Kawaljit.
