Woman accused of hitting people with car after losing fight in Erie waives assault charge

A Millcreek Township woman accused by Erie police of intentionally hitting people with her car following a fight in an eastside neighborhood earlier this month is facing an assault charge as the case against her proceeds in court.

Jalissa R. Clariett, 29, waived a second-degree felony count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to court at her preliminary hearing on Monday afternoon. Sixteen other charges that Clariett faced in the incident, including two first-degree felony counts of aggravated assault involving a victim less than 13 years old and six third-degree felony counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, were withdrawn by prosecutors at the hearing.

Clariett is expected to plead guilty to the aggravated assault charge at a later date under an agreement that led to the waiver, Erie County Assistant District Attorney Emily Downing said. The agreement also includes a sentencing recommendation of 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison, Downing said.

Downing noted that none of the people hit by Clariett's car during the April 8 incident suffered serious injuries.

Clariett remained in the Erie County Prison on $25,000 bond Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. on April 8 in the 2400 block of Perry Street. According to Erie police, officers learned from witnesses that Clariett and another woman had agreed to fight, and that Clariett lost the fight.

Clariett was then seen getting into her car and speeding forward in an attempt to hit someone as the car ran onto the grass and struck a tree, according to information in Clariett's criminal complaint. A witness told police Clariett then backed up and drove toward a group of people, running over a bicycle and hitting the cement porch of a residence in the 2400 block of Perry Street.

Six people were hit by Clariett's car during the incident, with three taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment of injuries, Erie police reported.
