Summer vacations are here. It is the time of the year when children can turn into master chefs, sports stars, or musical geniuses. A number of summer camps and workshops in the city are designed to help them grow without taking the fun out of learning. Here are a few options where creativity can flourish as the mercury rises:
Swatantra Theatre

The award-winning theatre group has the credit of attracting repeat students every year for its summer theatre workshop, which is designed to bring out a child’s personality by helping them shed their inhibitions. The month-long workshop covers the gamut of theatre activities, such as acting, writing, direction, stage management, art direction and the crucial work of creating something in coordination with an entire team. The workshop culminates in a production by the children in the first week of June. Past productions have included Malgudi Days and Turning Pages based on Sudha Murthy’s works.
Anaa’s Baking Studio

Anaa’s Baking Studio’s description of the traditional Black Forest Cake reads like something Roald Dahl might have written — chocolate cake infused with cherry liquor, filled with sour cherry filling and whipped cream. It is served with a layer of chocolate whipped cream. In this haven of sweet delectables, children can find a passion for life that marries flavours with colours. The syllabus for the five-day workshop includes “cakesicles” and cupcakes as well as tips on serving a favourite baked dish to create a mood of celebration.
Jyotirvidya Parisansthan

Jyotirvidya Parisansthan is India’s oldest astronomy club for amateurs, based in Pune. It has turned generations of young people into ardent stargazers. For the ‘Basic Course in Practical Astronomy’, experts will take children and their parents into the secret worlds of the solar system, comets, meteors and asteroids as well as the varied history of different calendars, astronomical instruments, radio astronomy and astrophotography, among others. The language of instruction is English.

If clay speaks to your child, this is where their instincts for one of art’s most versatile mediums can be honed. The pottery workshops last two to three hours and cover ways of making bowls, key chains, and fridge magnets that children can use. All materials, including the paint to be used, are safe for children. A DIY kit will be provided to children at the studio.

The studio opens its doors to students with a keen ear for music production and instruments. Children above 14 years are eligible for the music production workshops where they will be taught the basics of how music is made for various purposes. The studio will also help them understand background scores and its production.

It is of utmost importance for a child to know self-defence along with developing general fitness. This self-defence school offers workshops and courses ranging from martial arts to dancing, from kickboxing to wrestling and from boxing and taekwondo. Camps are conducted for 45 days and focus on mind-body development.
