Mahatma Gandhi

After removing chapters on Mughals, the National Council of Education and Research Training on Wednesday eliminates topics related to Mahatma Gandhi and his assassination, Hindu-Muslim unity, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ban from the Class 12 syllabus.

The deletes have been in the revised version of the NCERT social and political science textbooks released by the centre for the academic year 2023-24.

NCERT chief Dinesh Saklani reacted to it and said it should not be blown out of proportion and did not happen overnight. He said some deletions were not announced in its rationalisation exercise last year and all changes will be carried out in the new textbooks.

Saklani said the revised textbooks will be notified in a day or two.

Parts of Class 12 textbooks removed by the NCERT this year

  • ‘He (Gandhi) was particularly disliked by those who wanted Hindus to take revenge or who wanted India to become a country for the Hindus, just as Pakistan was for Muslims…’
  • ‘His steadfast pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists so much that they made several attempts to assassinate Gandhiji…’
  • Gandhiji’s death had an almost magical effect on the communal situation in the country… The Government of India cracked down on organisations that were spreading communal hatred. Organisations like the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh were banned for some time…
  • References to Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, as “a Brahmin from Pune” and “the editor of an extremist Hindu newspaper who had denounced Gandhiji as ‘an appeaser of Muslims’” were also taken out of a Class 12 History textbook

Earlier, NCERT issued a notification and announced the changes in the syllabus for Class 12 student citing the content of the textbooks were reconsidered for various reasons including the overlapping of similar content in the syllabus in lower and higher classes.

In June 2021, the NCERT rationalised the syllabus of Classes 6 to 12 to reduce the burden on students. All references to the 2022 Gujarat riots, Cold War, Mughal courts, and Industrial Revolution were dropped from the syllabus. Moreover, some Dalit writers were also removed from a Class 7 textbook, reports said.
