Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch and five times Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal passed away at the age of 95 late on Tuesday evening at a private hospital in Mohali.

The veteran leader took his last breath at around 8:28 PM on Tuesday in the ICU of Fortis Hospital in Mohali, where he was admitted over a week ago after complaining problem in breathing.

The news of Badal’s death was shared by the personal assistant of his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, SAD president.

The leader’s last rites will be performed on Thursday in Bhatinda’s Badal village.

His mortal remains will be brought to the party’s official headquarters in Sector 28, Chandigarh where his followers will be allowed to pay their last respects.

After this, a funeral procession will be carried out from Chandigarh to the Badal village, where the final rites would take place.

The hospital management issued a medical bulletin after the former chief minister’s death that read, despite appropriate medical efforts Parkash Singh Badal succumbed to his illness.

It added that on April 16 the leader was admitted at Fortis hospital, Mohali complaining with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma. On April 18 he was shifted to ICU after his condition worsened and was on NIV and HFNC support. Badal was under the supervision of Prof (Dr) Digambar Behera along with a Cardiology team of Pulmonology and critical care.

Entire Punjab along with the nation mourns the death of the senior leader. Badal was a doyen leader in the Indian politics, especially in Punjab.

The Centre, mourning the death of the veteran politician has declared a two-day state mourning that would be observed from April 26 to 27.

The tri-color flag will be flown at half-mast on all the official buildings across the country, where it is flown regularly and all the official entertainment activities remains suspended.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders across party lines have paid their deepest condolences and expressed their grief over Badal’s death.

PM Modi while expressing his condolences ranked Badal a colossal figure of Indian Politics and a remarkable statesman.

Mentioning the leader’s contribution towards the nation, PM Modi said, Badal worked tirelessly for the progress of Punjab and headed the state leadership through tough times.

The Prime Minister counted it as a personal loss of him and shared that he was very closely associated with Badal and has learnt a lot from him, he recalled his interactions with the late leader and expressed his condolences to the family members and countless admirers of Parkash Singh Badal.

Parkash Singh Badal a well-respected leader across Punjab was in active politics since past seven decades, he made his political debut in the 1950s as a worker of the Akali Dal Party.

A five times chief minister, he was also the youngest politician ever to rule Punjab as the CM. In 1970, he got elected for the first time as the state’s chief minister.

Badal served as the CM of Punjab from 1970-71, from 1977-80, and from 2007-2017, the longest ever.

Operation Kaveri: First batch of 278 Indians in Sudan leave for Jeddah

As a part of Opeartion Kaveri- India’s rescue operation to bring back its stranded citizens from war-hit Sudan, the first batch comprising 278 stranded nationals has left Sudan for Jeddah.

The rescued Indian Citizens have boarded navy ship INS Sumedha that will cover a sea route to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, from where they are expected to fly back to India in a C-130 Indian aircraft which has already been stationed.

The Indian government after opening its diplomatic channels and holding talks with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, On Sunday, stationed its two C-130 aircrafts and the INS Sumedha on standby to rescue the stranded Indians.

On Monday, India launched its rescue operation- Operation Kaveri to evacuate its citizens out of the warring African nation.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday notified about the rescue operation being underway and that 500 Indians reaching the Port Sudan.

The stuck Indian nationals would be evacuated via a sea route from the Port Sudan to Jeddah, Port Sudan is around 850 KM from the capital city Khartoum, which is under going war. Then from Jeddah, the evacuated citizens will be brought back to India via planes.

As per the official data, the total count of Indians in Sudan is 4000.

Sudan has been facing one of its worst crisis ever, with its own army and paramilitary force engaged in a clash over the power to rule the nation.

The clash started suddenly on April 15 and has intensified since then, it has till now taken down the lives of more than 420 that includes 273 civilians , one Indian national from Kerala also became the victim of the war.

After pressure by the international channels, the warring groups have decided for a 72-hour ceasefire starting today as to allow all the countries to evacuate their citizens safely.

Kolkata woman throws baby out of window minutes after giving birth in toilet

In a horrific incident, a woman allegedly killed her newborn baby by throwing him out of the window minutes after giving birth in the toilet in West Bengal. The horrendous incident took place on April 22 in Kolkata’s Kasba area.

Reports state that the woman gave birth to a newborn after she went to the toilet. Hearing him cry, the woman got perplexed and threw him out of the toilet’s window, breaking the glass pane.

Hearing the sound of the glass break, the locals rushed to the spot and found the newborn. They immediately informed the Kasba Police Station who then reached the spot and interrogated the woman.

The woman claimed that she was not aware of her being pregnant, as she was having a regular menstruation cycle for the last few months. On Saturday, she went to the toilet when she gave birth to a baby boy.

The police found the woman bleeding from her lower body. They immediately took both the woman and the baby to a nearby hospital where the baby passed away the next morning.

Police have booked the woman under a relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for an act done with the intent to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause it to die after birth.

As per the initial investigation, the woman was going through some mental disorder. She has been in a live-in relationship since June 2022 and married that man, who is an alcoholic, in November same year.

The woman’s in-laws claim that neither her husband nor they knew about her pregnancy. The police are currently probing the matter.

As the Karnataka assembly election intensifies, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to step into the campaigning for her party. Gandhi is likely to campaign in the Old Mysuru region today.

The Congress leader will arrive in Karntaka today to mark her first official campaign for the state assembly elections, Gandhi is likely to woo the Vokkaliga community as she will visit parts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, which comes under the Old Mysuru region considered to be a Vokkaliga dominated region.

As per reports, Gandhi will hold a roadshow in K R Pete in Mysuru and will take part in a women convention program in the Chamarajanagar district.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has been actively campaigning for the BJP in the poll bound state was in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar district on Monday, where Priyanka Gandhi is scheduled to visit.

On Monday, the deadline set by the Election Commission for the withdrawal of candidature for the elections ended, as per the ECI data a total of 2,613 candidates are in fray for the polls, while 517 candidates who filed their nomination withdrew their name.

The southern state is set to go to polls on May 10.

A tough contest is being seen in the ground especially between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, with both the parties mounting attacks, blame on each other on various issues.

With anti-incumbency against the current BS Bommai government,        BJP is high on hopes to retain the state for a second term with absolute majority. While Congress, on the other side is confident of taking back the power from the ruling party.

Big questions lie ahead of this elections, but all of it is going to be answered by the voters on the polling day and the results of which will be out on May 13.
