Coimbatore: An unidentified man looted 9.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments and 3 lakh from a house at Gemini Nagar near Chinniyampalayam on early Sunday morning.
Police said the house belonged to A Shahjahan, 40, who runs a footwear and mobile shop at Chinniyampalayam bus stop. He, along with his wife and children, had gone to his parents-in-law’s house at Karumbukadai on Friday night to celebrate Ramadan. His mother Nurjahan, 75, had gone to his sister’s residence in the Erode district.
Shahjahan and his family members returned to their home on Sunday around 10.45am and found that the lock on the front door of the house was broken open and some gold ornaments were missing from the house.
Immediately, he informed the Peelamedu police. Inspector S Mariamuthu rushed to the spot and launched a probe.
Based on Shahjahan’s complaint, police registered a case under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
Rashitha, meanwhile, called his mother-in-law and conveyed the information. Two hours later, when Nurjahan came to the Erode bus stand to board a bus to Coimbatore, she suffered cardiac arrest and died.
