56-year-old man from Mandya donates organs, saves four lives
Mysuru: A 56-year-old resident of KR Pet in Mandya has saved the lives of four people by donating his liver, kidneys and heart valves.
Basavanna was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals on April 17 in an extremely critical condition. The initial CT scan showed a brain stem infarct and he was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care.
Basavanna was kept on life support. On April 21, his condition worsened and at 6.39am he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure. Basavanna was healthy before this incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His family was counselled and they offered to donate his organs, the hospital stated on Monday.
As per organ donation protocols, officials from the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) initiated the process. Around 3.50pm on Friday, Basavanna’s organs—liver, two kidneys and heart valves— were harvested at the hospital. The liver and left kidney were transplanted at Apollo BGS Hospitals while the right kidney was sent to Manipal Hospital, Mysuru, and heart valves were sent to Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru.
N G Bharateesha Reddy, vice-president and unit head of Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, informed that to facilitate the cross-match facility for organ transplants in this region, SOTTO has signed an MoU with Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, under which all cross-matching of transplant patients will be undertaken saving the travel time to Bengaluru, which is crucial during the organ transplantation.
