KOLKATA: Cricket fans took over central Kolkata between late evening and night on Sunday — the cops being kept busy from as early as noon to keep normal traffic flowing in the area.
Sources said that fans, some of them travelling from neighbouring states, had even tried to block the Club House side in an attempt to catch a glimpse of former Indian captain and CSK skipper MS Dhoni.
But, the real menace was created by the bikers and cricket fans who failed to gain entry to the stadium despite making multiple efforts.
“Some of them even cut through view cutters and tried to chase down delegation cars in their attempt to be close to their cricketing idols,” said an officer on duty outside the Club House.
The police, though, immediately took action and cleared the crowd. Sources said 62 riders were caught for not wearing helmets. In 126 cases, the pillion riders were not wearing helmets and there were instances of triple riding. In all, 472 two-wheeler riders were prosecuted on Sunday.
“Since this crowd committed no crime and was just trying to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes, we did not detain anyone. However, those who violated traffic rules were prosecuted,” said a joint commissioner.
