CHENNAI: A 42-year-old man attacked at the funeral ceremony of a history sheeter at Old Washermenpet on Saturday died of his injuries on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Rajasekar of Thiruvottiyur. Police said he had gone to the funeral of history sheeter Kumar alias Karuppu Kumar, who was murdered for revenge on Friday. Kumar had several cases against him, including a murder case. He was eliminated to exact revenge for the murder of another history sheeter, Venkata in 2013. Venkata's son Akash, who learnt of Kumar's release from jail, plotted his murder.
Police said Rajasekar had met Kumar's relative Kamalakannan, 35, at the funeral on Saturday. Both lived in the same locality. The two had gone to drink on the terrace of Kumar's house. There, an argument broke out and Kamalakannan smashed Rajasekar with a stone, repeatedly.
Kamalakannan did not attend the funeral and left in a huff. Rajasekar 's family members thought that he was attending the funeral and did not launch a search for him, while he was lying unconscious on the terrace. Only on Saturday evening, after the funeral was over, people in the locality found Rajasekar lying in a pool of blood.
Korrukupet police registered a case of attempt to murder and rushed the victim to the Government Stanley Hospital. On Sunday morning, he succumbed to injuries at the hospital. His body was sent for postmortem. Police said he had suffered multiple injuries on his head leading to his death the next day. Based on a complaint from his wife, the Korukkupet police arrested Kamalakannan and altered the sections to murder on Sunday. Based on his confessions, Kamalakannan was remanded in judicial custody the same day.
Police said the killing was a result of a sudden provocation and there was no previous enmity brewing between the two, except that Venkata's son had asked him to avenge his father's death. They were discussing about the murder of Karuppu Kumar, when both picked up an argument, which ended in Rajasekar's death, police said.
Police have arrested six people in connection with the case.
