Ludhiana: The green activists kicked off phase 2 of ‘padyatra’ for the revival of Buddha Dariya on Sunday. The activists said despite several efforts,
pollution has not come down in the Nullah, affecting lives of millions of people of the South West Malwa area of Punjab and Rajasthan. The mission is aimed to spread awareness and protest against polluting of water bodies, subsoil water, and degradation of soil.
The activists have written a letter to Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Government of India, highlighting important issues observed during Buddha Dariya Padyatra-phase 1.
At the same time, copies have been endorsed to all eight MLAs whose constituencies are affected due to the pollution in Buddha Nullah. The activists protested for almost an hour at Glada ground on Chandigarh Road and visited the residence of MLA Sahnewal Hardeep Mundian. Since he was not available, so they handed over the copy to his assistant.
The activists claimed that Sahnewal constituency is the worst affected due to pollution.
The activists interacted with passersby and shared information against the serious situation due to pollution of Buddha Dariya, Satluj and subsoil water.
During padyatra phase 1, the activists had covered 50-km stretch of Buddha Nullah starting from Dhanansu till Wallipur — the confluence of Buddha Nullah and Satluj. They had also taken samples of hullah water which later revealed the presence of harmful chemicals, including arsenic and chromium.
