CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin on Sunday called upon DMK cadres to work for a total sweep in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to "safeguard the country", indicating his keenness to bring together the opposition on a larger national platform. Addressing the cadres at a wedding function in Chennai, Stalin urged them to begin the task of enrolling more members in the party and strengthening booth committees, "essential for success in the parliamentary polls".
Listing out the welfare schemes implemented by his government, Stalin said that as far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the DMK government has successfully completed two years and was stepping into the third year after fulfilling many of its poll promises. "Now it is time to work to safeguard the country. Only if we win all the seats, we will be able to do that," he said.
Flanked by Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Su Thirunavukkarasar at the function, Stalin said a situation has been created where only if there was a total sweep across the country, the nation could be 'safeguarded.' "Be prepared to save India. Motivate yourself for the task," he told the cadres.
Ever since he assumed office, Stalin has been seeking to bring together non-BJP leaders across the country on a same platform on various issues, particularly those concerning federal rights. He has also sought to play a bridge between Congress and a few non-BJP leaders. Earlier this month, he chaired a social justice conference where leaders from across the country participated, which is seen as a precursor to an anti-BJP political front for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Stalin noted at the function that even as the Dravidian model government was working overtime for the betterment of the state, he was also constantly fighting for upholding the federal rights.
Though he chose not to name the BJP or the leaders of the saffron party in his speech, he took a dig at the Centre for not extending financial cooperation for the state. "The state government has been fulfilling all its election promises despite the Union government failing to provide financial support," he said.
