NEW DELHI: A 39-year-old scooterist was allegedly beaten to death by two youths in central Delhi's Shadipur village on Saturday night. The two suspects, who were agitated over the victim's parked scooter blocking the way for their cab on a narrow lane, have been arrested, police said.
The victim was identified as Pankaj Thakur, a resident of West Patel Nagar who worked at a shop and did other part-time jobs.
Police said they received a call at 11.30pm about the incident at Main Bazar Wali Gali in Shadipur Village. "The caller told us that an injured man was lying on a street. He was taken to the hospital by locals. We later came to know that he was declared dead by the doctors," deputy commissioner of police (central) Sanjay Sain said. Sain said the duo's involvement in the crime came to light after a CCTV camera at the spot was scanned. One of them was involved in two criminal cases as a juvenile.
Scuffle followed argument over incessant honking Investigations into the death of a scooterist, found injured on the road in central Delhi late Saturday night, revealed that two youths who were enraged over the victim not giving them way had kicked and punched him following an altercation.
Raids were conducted on the basis of CCTV footage, and two men were arrested in central Delhi. The accused were identified as Manish Kumar (19) and Lalchand alias Golu (20). Both are friends and live in Shadipur Village.
Police said that during interrogation, the accused claimed that they had gone to Rohini to meet Golu's sister. On the way back, they booked a cab. "The man was standing with his scooter in a lane when both accused came in a cab and started honking," the officer said, adding that Thakur had come to a shop to buy some items.
The accused came out of the cab, and an argument started. "The two men were agitated over the biker not giving them way in a congested lane. An argument took place over continuous honking, and a scuffle followed," the officer said.
Another officer said both men told Thakur to come to their area, and then they would show him their power. "The victim told them to take him to their area. All three men sat on the scooter and started going," the officer said.
On the way, cops suspect that there was an argument and Thakur was pushed off his scooter. He fell down, and both of the accused started thrashing him and fled.
While working at the shop, Thakur also delivered items. Cops said that one of the accused was involved in two criminal cases when he was a juvenile. TNN
