PANAJI: The state government has decided to defer the decision to conduct Goa University Common Entrance Test (GUCET) for admission to general education undergraduate (UG) programmes for the academic year 2023-2024 as there is not enough awareness about the exams at the higher secondary level.
"There is no proper awareness about the entrance test at higher secondary level and that is the reason the government decided to defer the entrance test. The proposal was sent to us by the Goa University," education secretary and director of higher education Prasad Lolayekar told TOI.
The university had proposed GUCET for UG programmes. Based on the Goa University decision, director education held a meeting with principals of higher secondaries to discuss the implementation of GUCET for 2023. Most of the principals said that students were not aware of such exams and in view of that students may not appear for GUCET. The decision was conveyed to the directorate of higher education.
The director of higher education has now conveyed to the GU that the government has decided to defer its decision to conduct GUCET for the academic year 2023-2024 due to various feasibility issues.
To save students from appearing for multiple entrance examinations conducted on different dates, sometimes coinciding with each other, and also to provide an equal opportunity to all students from different boards, the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked all state universities, deemed universities, private universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) to adopt and use CET score for admissions to their UG programmes.
"The GU academic council in its meetings held on September 19 and December 19 at the behest of the director, directorate of higher education had accepted the proposal for the conduct of the Common Entrance Test for admission to general education UG programmes offered by the Goa University and its affiliated colleges. The proposal for the conduct of Goa University Common Entrance Test (GUCET) was thereafter referred to the government for approval," the university's assistant registrar academic (colleges) section said.
Goa is set to implement the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020 at the tertiary general education level. From the new academic year 2023-24, students joining the first year of BA, BSc, BCom and other equivalent general education UG programmes will be able to pursue a four-year degree programme as against the three-year programme.
