Two killed in Tinsukia storm, heavy rain to lash northeast today

GUWAHATI: A thunderstorm barreled through Assam in the last 24 hours, under the impact of a cyclonic circulation over east Assam and the neighbouring states, killing two persons in Tinsukia district on Saturday night.
The IMD has issued a 'yellow warning' for the northeast on Monday.
In view of the situation, the district (Tinsukia) administration has asked schools and colleges to remain shut.
One Bijoy Manki (57) of Raidang tea estate and Dev Kumar Thakur (26) of Bordubi tea estate died after branches of trees uprooted by strong winds fell on them in two separate incidents in Tinsukia. An ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each have been paid to the families of the two victims. As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report on Sunday evening, nine districts were hit by the storm, affecting 41,410 people. About 37,182 people were affected in Tinsukia district alone.
