NEW DELHI—The United Nations confirmed a demographic shift that is expected to have profound global implications in the years ahead, saying that India is overtaking China in April as the world’s most populous country.

India’s population will reach 1,425,775,850 people this month, matching and then surpassing the population of mainland China, the U.N. said. The South Asian nation will continue growing for decades, peaking in the 2060s, while China’s population has started falling. The two countries together make up more than one-third of the world’s total population.
