PUNE District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh has set up a four-member committee headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijaykumar Magar to investigate the Sunday morning accident involving a passenger bus and truck carrying goods which killed five persons and injured 21 others. The committee has been given seven days’ time to complete the inquiry and submit its report.
The committee has been tasked with suggesting short-term and long-term measures to prevent accidents of this kind from repeating at this stretch.
The committee has been asked to incorporate suggestions proposed by Save Life Foundation earlier. Deshmukh said that of the injured persons, five have been admitted to Sassoon General Hospital, nine at Chavan Multispeciality Hospital, six at Navale Hospital and two at Dinanath Mangeshkar Memorial Hospital.
“Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken cognisance of the incident and enquired about the well-being of the injured,” said Deshmukh. Deshmukh said that earlier Save Life Foundation has conducted a review of the accidents happening near Navale Bridge, an accident prone area near which the Sunday’s accident took place, and had suggested measures that could be undertaken to minimise the accidents.
Based on the recommendations of the NGO’s report, several measures such as installations of strips, removal of encroachment from the roadside, installations of protective metal barriers on both sides of the road, increasing deployment of traffic policemen and installing rumble strips to slow the speed of the vehicles while approaching the bridge, were taken.
