NEW DELHI: Infrastructure and hostel issues have yet again come to the fore at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with students claiming that there has been a lack of drinking water at the various hostels.
Students claimed that for the last month there had been a shortage of water at the hostels, affecting their health and well-being.
Aishe Ghosh, president of the JNU Students' Union, said that after a meeting with university officials, including vice-chancellor Santishree D Pandit, they were assured that every hostel would be given two functioning water coolers. "While she showed us letters written to Delhi Jal Board, we were told that the storage capacity of tanks cannot be increased as the university has limited funds."
She added, "We were told that JNU received very little amount for non-recurring grants, so providing basic facilities is difficult. We have raised other issues regarding hostel infrastructure such as shortage of basic furniture like beds, tables, chairs." Ghosh appealed to students to join the protest call in the coming days.
Senior university officials could not be reached for comment.
