Ponda: The state government has released Rs 3.7 crore to 282 farmers as part of the first installment of 80% compensation under the Special Assistance Scheme to Sugarcane Cultivators.
In lieu of the Dharbandora-based Sanjivani Sugar Factory’s closure in 2019, the government has announced compensation for five years to the 700-plus farmers.
Of 282 beneficiaries, a majority of these farmers hail from Sanguem, while the others are based in Quepem, Dharbandora, and Pernem.
The government has sanctioned the amount for payment which has been deposited in their respective accounts, factory administrator Satej Kamat said, adding that the remaining 20% compensation will be paid soon.
The All Goa Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association, through its meeting on August 31, 2021, had demanded that while calculating the compensation, the government should consider the highest quantity of cane supplied by them to the factory. The farmers had supplied 47,069 tonne during the 2017-18 crushing season, which was the highest quantity.
“Accordingly, the government is paying the compensation as per the quantity of cane supplied in 2017-18, irrespective of the quantity they have actually supplied to the government,” Perni said.
