KOLKATA: The city has reported a dip in house thefts since 2017, data released by Kolkata Police revealed. From 3,493 in 2017, the figures have dipped to 1,308 by the end of 2022.
According to NCRB, in 2018, the city reported 2,608 cases and in 2020 it came down to 1,325. In 2021, a slight rise happened with 1,446 cases but it again dipped to 1,308 by the end of 2022. Thus, from around 290 odd theft cases per month six years ago in 2017, the average cases per month have come down to barely around 108 in 2020-22, stated the officers.
The cases have also come down to a trickle in the summer months since 2021. Between March and May in 2021, barely 95 house thefts were reported at various police stations in Kolkata. A total of 1,246 thefts were reported that year. "In other words, around 7.8% of all thefts that year took place in these three months," said an officer.
Between March and May in 2022, the city reported 108 house thefts, out of a total 1,305 cases reported in the same year. The three summer months thus contributed to 8.2% of all house thefts.
This year, from March to April 18, cops have recorded 65 cases of theft. From January, the city has witnessed 108 cases. "The house thefts might witness a slight rise this year but the statistics show that our neighbourhood watch policies, which include access to private CCTV footages, have been successful," stated an officer.
