COIMBATORE: The driver of a '108' ambulance and a patient were killed after the vehicle fell into a 20-foot-deep gorge near the Valparai Government Hospital on Friday.
The deceased were identified as driver P Kalidass, 27, a native of Dharmapuri district and K Sivakumar, 45, of Upper Paralai tea estate in Valparai.
Sivakumar, a tea estate worker, had sustained injuries after he fell off a wall near his residence around 6pm. "His family alerted the ambulance service and Kalidass rushed him to the hospital. When Kalidass parked the vehicle on a slope near the hospital around 8.30pm and opened the rear door for Sivakumar, the vehicle rolled down and fell into a gorge. The duo died on the spot," a police officer said.
