BHUBANESWAR: Three students of premier BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar were injured after locals from nearby localities attacked them on the college playground. They had an altercation over playing match of cricket. Police have started an investigation into the matter.
According to sources, a group of around 12 undergraduate (UG) students, inmates of BR Ambedkar Hostel of the college, reached the playground at around 9.30am to play cricket. Due to the holiday, there were no classes in the college. A group of non-students were playing cricket before the hostel inmates reached there.
“We requested the local youths to allow us to play there. They asked us to wait for a few minutes till the end of their match. After half an hour they left the crease, but they were not happy. Both the groups had arguments over the delay. Excluding a few local boys, most of the non-students went out of the ground. When we were busy playing cricket, a group of around 20 youths entered the playground and argued with us,” said a Plus III student, who was present there during the attack.
He said the youths armed with iron rods, sticks and some sharp weapons attacked some of the BJB College students. “Three of my friends got seriously injured in the attack. They even chased us till we entered the hostel. Besides the three, they also slapped and kicked some of us,” said another student of the hostel.
After getting information from the students, local police reached the spot and took the injured students to hospital. After the incident, police personnel were deployed in front of the hostel. A complaint was lodged at Badagada police station in this regard. The police interrogated some youths in this case, said the Commissionerate Police sources.
“One of our students had an injury on head, while two others were stabbed on their hands. We will close the hostel side gate after this incident. We are planning not to allow outsiders into the playground. As the examinations will start in the college, we will not allow such incidents in the campus,” said Gulam Moinuddin Khan, principal of BJB Autonomous College.
