NEW DELHI: Hours after a woman was shot at in the Saket court complex, chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal said the law and order situation in the capital had completely collapsed.
Without naming anyone, Kejriwal said those responsible for maintaining law and order were busy obstructing others' work.
Kejriwal also referred to the reports of an alleged Rs 350-crore diversion of funds in Delhi Police and questioned the Prime Minister if the case would be probed and culprits be jailed.
Reacting to the news reports on the firing, he tweeted, "Law and order situation in Delhi has completely broken down. Instead of obstructing the work of others and playing dirty politics over it, everyone should pay attention to their work. And if they can't manage, they should resign so that someone else could do the job. The safety of people cannot be left at the mercy of God."
In a separate tweet, the chief minister posted the video of the incident and asked, "LG sahab, what is happening in our Delhi?"
Delhi being a Union territory with an assembly, all issues related to land, police and public order fall directly under the LG's domain. Delhi Police reports directly to the central government through the lieutenant governor.
Addressing a press conference, minister Atishi expressed concern that the attack on a woman had taken place in a highly secured zone. "The graph of crime is rising in Delhi, but instead of paying attention to law and order, the LG is busy taking credit for work done by the Kejriwal government. It is my request to the LG that he should... give people a safe city to live in."
Atishi alleged that people neither felt safe inside their home nor outside. "Who is responsible for such a situation of law and order in Delhi and the crimes happening to women in broad daylight?" she questioned.
She said it was clearly mentioned in the Constitution that the Delhi LG was responsible for maintaining law and order. "If he boasts so much of being on the ground, what has he done in the past one year to upgrade the security of people in the national capital?"
In another press conference, AAP chief spokesperson and minister Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned how the accused managed to take a gun inside the court complex. "There are strict instructions that a person entering a court premise has to pass through metal detectors." He said Friday's attack on a woman was not an isolated incident of violence inside the city court complexes. A prominent lawyer was shot dead just outside the Dwarka court complex some time ago, he pointed out. He alleged that the law and order situation had been continuously deteriorating.
The LG inspects projects being undertaken by Delhi government and gets his photos clicked, but should he not go and get his photos clicked at a police station in Delhi, at Saket District Court, he wondered.
Bharadwaj also hit out at the Centre and questioned how a purported "scam" of Rs 350 crore took place under the watch of senior officers of Delhi Police. "The case will now be investigated by their own officers. Where is CBI and ED in such a case?" he asked.
"The LG is accountable to the people of the state. We want to know what he is doing regarding this matter. It has been over 24 hours since this report has come out in the media," Bharadwaj said.
