How to play split-screen in Fortnite

One of the best additions to Fortnite over the past few years has been the ability to play the game in split-screen mode. This useful feature allows two players to enjoy the battle royale game on the same screen without the need to own a second console.

There are a few limitations to its use, but it's a great way to let friends and family experience one of the most popular free games on the market. Here's how to play Fortnite in split-screen mode.

Compatible systems

While Fortnite is available on just about every system under the sun, split-screen mode is limited to Xbox and PlayStation consoles. If you're running it on either Series X, Series S, or PS5, you'll benefit from frame rates of up to 60 frames per second.

Epic Games has not indicated that split-screen gameplay will be coming to PC or Nintendo Switch, despite several rumors since the feature was first released in 2019.

How to play split-screen in Fortnite

Getting a friend to join in on the fun is an easy process, and it follows the same steps for all compatible consoles. Before you start, however, make sure you have a second account and controller available for your buddy to use. Then, follow these easy steps to get split-screen mode running:

Step 1: Navigate to the Main Menu.

Step 2: Make sure the second controller is connected to your console and is turned on.

Step 3: Once connected, the second player should be invited to select their account.

Step 4: After signing in, the second player will now appear in the Fortnite lobby.

Step 5: That's all there is to it! You'll now be able to hop into games together and fight toward a Victory Royale.

Not all game modes are compatible

It should come as no surprise, but Solo Mode is not available when playing split-screen online multiplayer. This would lead to an unfair advantage in a battle royale, as two people on the same couch could coordinate their attacks together and effectively work as a team against all the other single players. For that reason, Solo Mode is not compatible with split-screen play. You'll also be unable to play in Creative Mode or Team Rumble.

Instead, you'll be stuck with either Squads or Duos mode. These are the only two modes that work when two players are using the same console, and there's no word from Epic Games on whether this will change in the future.

You might also want to consider that:

  • The split-screen session will end if one player disconnects, even if the other player stays logged in.
  • You won’t see each other’s lobby or menu because screen sharing only starts when a match is in session.
  • Players will not share an inventory.
  • Both players have to select the same language setting because split-screen can’t handle multiple languages.

Tips for playing in split-screen

Although it’s fun to jump into a bit of couch co-op, you won’t want to overlook the potential downsides. The biggest — and most obvious — issue is that it will cut your screen size in half. This makes teamwork and communication paramount, as you’ll rely heavily on your teammate to let you know what they’re seeing. The split-screen option will only show feeds in horizontal orientations, and you can’t switch it back to vertical. This isn’t the worst thing in the world, but if you prefer to run your co-op vertically, it might take some adjusting. So long as you’re mindful of these drawbacks, the split-screen mode can be a lot of fun and is a great way to introduce your friends to the Fortnite craze.

How to damage opponents with the Lock On Pistol in Fortnite
The Lock On Pistol in Fortnite.

As part of a weekly challenge in Fortnite, players are tasked with dealing 200 damage with the Lock On Pistol. This challenge has caused some confusion, as acquiring the weapon isn't as consistent as players might have hoped. In this guide, we'll show you how to get your hands on the Lock On Pistol and how to deal 200 damage with it in Fortnite.
How to find the Lock On Pistol

First, you need to get your hands on the Lock On Pistol. Currently, the only known ways of finding one are by opening chests or collecting them from Supply Drops. The weapon isn't available from NPCs or any method just yet. This means you'll want to head to a high-traffic area like Mega City to find a bunch of chests. Keep in mind that Mega City will be busy, but there are plenty of chests available. If you want to play it safe, you can visit a different point of interest (POI). Keep opening chests until you get your hands on the Lock On Pistol.

How to survive storm phases carrying an Epic weapon in Fortnite
Character jumping while holding Epic weapon in Fortnite.

A new Fortnite challenge for surviving storm phases while carrying an Epic weapon has caused some confusion, as the quest's wording isn't exactly clear. Thankfully, the challenge is much easier than it seems, and once you know what to do, you can get through it relatively quickly. Here's how to survive storm phases while carrying an Epic weapon in Fortnite.
What is an Epic weapon?
Fortnite uses a rarity system with its weapons, which are denoted by colors. Purple weapons are Epic, but keep in mind you can utilize any weapon of higher rarity to complete this quest. As long as the weapon is at least Epic, you'll earn credit for surviving storm phases.
How to get an Epic weapon

There are several ways to get Epic weapons. One way is to simply find one from chests or as floor loot, but this isn't as reliable. You can also purchase Epic weapons from NPCs around the map. Nearly all main hubs have an NPC who sells weapons, so be sure to talk with them if you have the funds. Using an Upgrade Station is another solid option for collecting an Epic weapon, though it's expensive. Another option is to defeat the Highcard Boss found at Brutal Bastion, Shattered Slabs, and Mega City. Upon defeat, the Highcard Boss drops a Mythic Havoc Suppressed Rifle.

How to place chicken crossing signs in Fortnite
New characters from Fortnite Chapter 4, Season 2.

It wouldn't be Fortnite without exciting events with quests to keep you busy, and the Spring Breakout Event has ensured that there's a reason to return to the game on a daily basis. Each day brings a brand-new quest for you to tackle somewhere on the map – some easy and some a little more time-consuming – but all of them are equally silly and fun. If you've stumbled upon one of these quests asking you to place chicken crossing signs at Frenzy Fields or Kenjutsu Crossing, we'll tell you how to do so below.
How to place chicken crossing signs In Fortnite
The first step you'll need to complete to place the chicken crossing signs is landing in one of the two appropriate POIs. You can either drop at Frenzy Fields in the southwest of the map or Kenjutsu Crossing in the southeast. Either one works fine, though it's worth noting that the spots to plant the signs are a bit more condensed at Kenjutsu Crossing, so it may be the fastest option when dealing with opposing teams trying to interrupt your process.

Whichever POI you choose, land there and look around for glowing spots indicating somewhere you can plant a chicken crossing sign. Selecting the quest in your Quests tab will allow you to see markers for the exact locations of these glowing spots if you don't happen to see them right away. Walk up to each of them at the POI and press the corresponding button to place all of the necessary signs, then enjoy the easy XP and progress towards your Spring Breakout Event rewards.
