KOLKATA: The state health department has decided to extend the retirement age of doctors under the National Health Mission (NHM) by five years, making it 67 years instead of the current 62.
Health officials pointed out the step was taken to mitigate the shortage of medical officers, including specialists. The health department has also said that the tenure of doctors can be renewed after retirement up to 70 years of age.
Sources in the health department said doctors under NMH were put is various patient service. Most of them serve for patient care in urban primary health centres under different civic bodies across the state. They are engaged in the service under contract.
